Ash joins us as our Workplace Health, Safety & Environment Manager – a brand new role for the organisation and the result of our enormous growth in recent months. We grabbed 5 with Ash to hear about his background, what makes health & safety so interesting and a bit about a recent award recognition.
How long have you been in the Health & Safety industry, and how did you get into it?
I started out in operationally-led roles within the leisure environment – mainly aquatics, having started in Life Saving initially. I found Health & Safety an area in my operational roles that I enjoyed the most, so naturally gravitated to a safety-focused career path in 2018 and haven’t looked back since!
Some may assume managing risk and safety can be a little dry at times – but its actually the ability to be creative in the industry that you like the most?
Yeah definitely. It’s learning to justify incidents using an evidence-based approach and ensuring we are always compliant and one step ahead of any improvement notices – that’s the thrill. I enjoy the detail and being an analytical thinker. I am always thinking worst case scenario and working back creative solutions to avoid – its always interesting!
And you’ve been in the industry for 10+ years now and recently won an award – can you tell us what that award was for?
I was awarded the 2021 Occupational Health & Safety Leadership & Achievement Award for my work in a previous role where I consistently adopted and performed safe work practices and for demonstrating a commitment to safety. I was honoured to be acknowledged for the work I had led over the past number of years and reaffirmed my career path which was a personal and professional high point.
